12 Apostles & Port Fairy (golf).
After a great breakfast in a nice spot called the Grassroots Deli Cafe, we took a drive back from Port Campbell to see the 12 Apostles, which are sand stacks along the spectacular coastline. There used to be 12 but now only 9 remain due to coastal erosion. It is a coastline that reminds us of places we had visited in Portugal and California.
After a couple of short stops at scenic spots along the road we drove to Port Fairy. Port Fairy is near the larger town of Warrnambool. There is a small island nearby, famous for a small penguin population, about which a movie, a comedy, called “Oddball” was based on. It is a hilarious family movie we had watched before we left home.
We stopped here to play an afternoon game of golf at the Port Fairy Golf Links. It is a 125 year old golf club. We had a great game here, the course was very high quality, in good condition and it is seaside with sweeping ocean views on several holes. The full course is by the ocean with just high dunes of grass (and snakes) between the course and the ocean. Signs before the first tee warn: “snakes seen in this area”. The pro shop attendant said when I asked, yes there are snakes and there have been bites, so be careful. Needless to say, when either of our balls when into grassy dunes we did not go looking. The weather was mixed, some sun, lots of cloud, some showers and a solid wind gusting to about 50km/hr or so most of the round. We stayed this night at the A1 Motels Port Fairy Motel for $127Ca in Port Fairy. We had supper at The Stump restaurant. Many restaurants were closed since it is a small town and a Tuesday night. The Stump was packed with locals, many families on Easter school break. We had a really good meal of Fish and Chips and a local draft beer.
Here are some pics of the 12 apostles and nearby scenery…….
The pic below is of a sign by the first tee at the golf course……
