Arrive in Australia - Melbourne
We flew Air New Zealand from Christchurch to Melbourne, with an 85min stop in Auckland enroute. We arrived in Melbourne at about 3:45pm. The flights ran perfect without a hitch.
When we arrived at the airport we sought out the Optus Store (Australia telecom company) to obtain esim cards for our phones. We had tried to download these online before we arrived but that did not work. However, we arrived in the airport and there was a sign in baggage claim for a special airport deal on esim cards for Australia. It was $25 for 65Gb of data and included local calling and texting with an Australia phone number for 28 days. This worked out perfect and the store attendant loaded these on our phones very quickly.
We called for an Uber ride from the airport to our hotel, the Pegasus Aparthotel in the central business district.
With the time change it gets dark earlier in Australia than it did in New Zealand and it is fall in this part of the world so each day gets shorter at this time of year.
The day of arrival we did not do much, as it was dark soon after we got to the hotel. A short walkabout and stop at the Woolworth’s supermarket, which was less than a block from our hotel, and then we went to supper at 39 Pizzeria CBD and had a gourmet pizza for supper. We were surprised to see the restaurant very busy on a Monday night.
We are in Australia for 28 nights. Staying 5 nights in Melbourne and while there we will take a Phillip Island Tour to see the penguin parade (this will be explained in more detail later). We then go on from Melbourne renting a car and driving the Great Ocean Road and staying a night in each of Port Campbell and Port Fairy. We are playing a game of golf in Port Fairy. Then driving on to Adelaide, where we will stay 5 nights. We are attending an Australian Rules Football game in Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval.
