Day 10 Afternoon - Walk around Kuirau Park (public park in Rotorua) & mud bath
So after a lunch and a rest, the same day as our hike up the volcano we went for a walk in the afternoon around a local park. In that park are various pools with geothermal activity. Some water pools have a yellow green colour and a smell of sulphur! In others the colour is milky brown or milky green and the water is literally bubbling hot! Some areas there is steam coming from the ground! There was one very large body of water that was oozing steam and a warning sign said the water was 100 degrees C - do not touch! The rocks and grounds also have unusual colours due to the sulphur content. The brush and trees immediately by the hot pools is white and dead from the conditions.
After that walk we went to a pre-booked mud bath at the Queen Elizabeth Health Centre!
