Drive to Adelaide (kangaroo in the bush)
So we left Port Fairy today to drive to Adelaide, where we will be staying for five nights. Google maps said it was a 6.5 hour drive. We knew the first part of the drive was to be on rural roads and when we left Port Fairy it was poring rain. We must have gotten off the preferred route because we were soon on a rural road with virtually no traffic, no local businesses, just the odd farm and some run down junkyards here and there. The road was paved and ok surface but narrow and had bush overhanging in some places. So a bit off track in the bush roads. We went about 2 hours of drving without seeing any buesinesses and just a few pickup trucks. In a couple of spots the road narrowed to one lane with some shoulder to allow a car to pull partway off and pass by. The scenery was actually nice much of the way, rolling hills, farms with sheep and cows, big trees. We did see some other things along the road - kangaroos! There were signs for kangaroos in several spots. We encountered two live kangaroos on the side of the road. We had been cautioned that kangaroos, like moose in NL, can be a collision problem. The two live ones we saw, hopped into the bush as we slowed down and got close. They were not the surprising part. In about 1.5 hours of the drive we passed 12 dead kangaroos along the road! Two large dead kangaroos right in the middle of the road, probably hit by a vehicle the night before. Most of the other dead ones were on the shoulder or edge of the pavement. We saw a relatively late model SUV vehicle parked along the side of the road with the quarter panel and front corner smashed up, probably a kangaroo collision.
We also saw a couple of dead foxes, a couple of other dead animals that might be kangaroo or something else, hard to tell. And maybe a sheep carcus on the shoulder. Lots of birds, many Australian Magpies, and some white cockatoos, including one dead on the road, another looked in rough shape with his white feathers scattered on the road.
As we emerged from the bush to a more regional road we arrived in the a lovely town of Naracoorte, which is a hub for sheep, cattle and wheat faming, and also the wine region of the Limestone Coast, who knew! It was also still 330km from Adelaide! We had a nice lunch in Naracoorte and managed to get ourselves on a main highway, back on track.
We eventually made it to Adelaide safely, no kangaroo collisions and checked into our VRBO rental. Another adventure complete, all good.
